Upper and Lower end on 89 Carrera
I have 132,000 miles and finally doing upper end. I will drive this Porsche for another 5 - 10 years at 5,000 miles per year. So, do I proceed with lower end (no track events before and no track events in future) or is the talk of air cooled lower end lasting 2-3 times longer than upper end accurate? Anybody knowledgeable please chime in. I will likely re-gear 3rd/4th/5th in G50 transmission. Thoughts? Thank you.

When the heads, cylinders and pistons are removed, you can pull one or more rods off of the crank and inspect the rod bearings. But, on my 964 engine at about 150k, the rods and mains looked almost new, but the intermediate shaft bearings were very worn. With that engine, I'm glad I split the case. Now, a 3.2 doesn't have a power steering pump adding additional load to the Intermediate shaft, but you can't see the main or IS bearings unless you open it up. But, if the oil pressure is still good, that's a positive sign.
