Question about Stinger exhaust

Hey guys. I’d like to have this awesome exhaust note for my 911 that is track only. I have a 3.6 with stock heat exchangers and a custom 2 into 1 open exhaust that sounds nothing like this.
https://youtu.be/FqUuCyP8ADg

Would this be the Stinger exhaust withOUT silencers from GT Racing Products? http://www.gt-racing.com/porsche-911-stinger-exhaust-pipe-no-silencer-part-911-stinger-ii/

Or the one from Tarett? https://www.vividracing.com/tarett-engineering-stinger-exhaust-system-finish-porsche-911-6589-p-151379360.html

Which one will generally give me a HP gain (or loss) and how do these exhaust systems get to such a high pitched note anyway?

Wil

I had the Vivid racing stinger pipe on my 993 and (g50) 911. VERY loud, but they sounded like an angry GT3 on high rpm. I have the Fabspeed equal length headers, so the two connecting flanges were further apart. I cut the pipes on each side, and installed two small resonators to take the edge off the sound. But still loud... It's a great set up for the track, and it sounds like you have a 100 HP more! How much you actually gain, depends on what exhaust you had before. For the street, this system is useless. You can't even hear yourself think... And your neighbors will hate you. And the police too...

There was another thread a while back about the 6-2-1 stinger exhausts like the ones you're asking about.

High pitched exhaust note

See posts 16 and 17 for some video of what a 6-2-1 sounds like!

So you need the equal length headers in addition to the stinger pipe to get that sound? I currently have stock heat exchangers but I think the stinger pipes can bolt on directly to that(?)

I'd think you'll get a similar sound by just bolting on the merged pipe stinger. I had a custom built stinger similar to the ones mentioned in these threads on my 914/6 racecar (granted, headers in my case also), and it sounded a lot like the videos I linked in the other thread.

This is what I have, stock 993 heat exchangers into custom Y-pipe. Looks like the Y-pipe from Vivid racing will not fit unless I get headers. Any recommendations for a track only setup?

Looks like a similar setup to the vivid racing/tarett Y-pipe but doesn’t sound anything like it ???

Your setup does look similar … when you say it doesn't sound like the others, are you judging that from revving it in while stationary? Or while on track from the driver's seat? I've found that cars sound a lot different from the driver's seat.

While on track from the driver’s seat, from watching cellphone videos of my car go by and from standing over the engine bay, revving the motor with the throttle body. Those cars in the YouTube links I put in this thread sound much more high pitched. It’s not even close. Mine is a loud because it’s open exhaust but it’s a much deeper , lower pitched sound (still high pitched compared to muffler setups though).

Exhaust pitch is very different for different engine configurations. Exhaust primary, secondary and final output length have a big effect on the exhaust pitch (frequency) and overall tone. The 993 exhaust is not equal length and this disturbs the higher overtones that might give you that high frequency pitch. The number of exhaust pulses (rpm) and to a lesser degree displacement and time at overlap also contribute to exhaust tone.

In short, no way a 3.6 at 6200rpm redline will sound like a 2.0 at 7500 deg redline even with the same stinger pipe.

I think I still have hope! What equal length headers do you guys recommend out there? How important is the ceramic finish?

I worked at Cox Motorsports in Raymore MO back in the late '90s. The 6-2-1 stepped headers that James and a local exhaust guru cooked up were amazing. You could close your eyes at events and tell which cars were our customers' by the sound. The dyno curves were also pretty. They didn't really increase overall output a whole lot, but the broadening of the curves was a huge benefit

Here's a picture I pirated from another thread.

What ever headers you choose, the fit of the pipes needs to be compatible with your oil line set up.
