911 Cylinder 1
Working on getting this 1976 911 up and running. I turned the engine over by hand. It binds up almost at TDC in cylinder #1. Borescope shows rust or a lump of coal. Not sure what it is, but I’m going to power foam it and see if it dissolves. Worst case scenario, I’ll have to remove the head.
This is the first time I’ve worked on a Porsche. Can the head and cylinder be removed and reinstalled without dropping the engine? ![]() ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Motor comes out, injection, shrouds, fan, exhaustcam rockers, cam carrier, head. Now you can see
Thought, is the carbon harder than the valve seats? Bruce |

This is nothing that I have ever tried, but if you were to put it at TDC compression stroke (valves are closed)with PB blaster of other solvents and rock it back ad forth to see if you could break it up. Pull the exhaust system off and open the E valve up as much as possible to extract the pieces. Very little to lose. Bob

I am going to foam it and rock it back and forth. Try to loosen it up. Maybe dissolve it or be able to grab what’s left. We will see.
Is it harder than the valve seat? I see your point, but I don’t want to damage anything by letting the starter and piston do the work. If it IS a hard lump of coal... I don’t know. Makes me nervous. If powerfoam and rocking does work. I’ll make note of it and move on. There may be other reasons to drop the engine too, at which time I’ll run hard fuel lines through the tunnel. have you checked for broken head studs yet? that's always a common one . especially if the studs have never been changed my 76 had 3 broken and 12 snapped while trying to remove all 24,, good times

I haven’t checked head studs yet. Where the heads mate to the cylinders, and the the cylinders mate to the case looks ok. That’s only the ones I can see though.
Going to work on the master cylinder, clutch lever, pedal cluster, heater lines, cylinder #1. Hook everything up and maybe try to get it running before dropping the engine (if possible). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

***The Power if Foam!!!***
Today we power foamed the cylinders. We gave cylinder #1 an extra shot. Low and behold it rotates freely. https://youtu.be/pZvHch8T01s On to other things: brakes, pedal cluster, fuel system. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
