cam tower refurbish and...
Found one of my 69 three bearing cam towers has some unexpected rocker shaft journal scoring. They might seal up...but it would be a bummer if they leaked. Sourced a decent local 3 bearing replacement, but the oil squirter holes looked plugged. What is the std procedure for refurbing the cam towers? Drilling out the lead plugs and flushing? If I do this, what is the re-plugging material and procedure? Also I need to cap off the end where the MFI cam stuck out. I have the cap, but how is this secured? Loctite or JB Weld or ? I am running carbs vs MFI.
Thanks! |

When I did mine, I drilled (not all the way through) and tapped the plug and used a small bolt and an appropriately sized nut to pull the plug out.
I reused the old plug. I used a thin coat of JB, recessed the plug slightly and peened around the perimeter for extra security. The cap does not have real pressure behind it, so JB will do the job of sealing it.

Quite a few people take out the plug and replace it with an 1/8"NPT plug. Pull the plug like Gordon said, then you can get to the spray bar, then tap the hole for the pipe plug.
As for the rocker shaft, do you have the RSR seals on the ends? |

They make replacement plugs for the cam towers. Price is around $5 each.
