oil cooler delete
We have a 3.0 track motor that I will run without the block cooler. I have made a block off plate without filter and will plumb the bottom inlet line back to the tank. My question, how is the block thermostat cavity handled. I have heard of a couple of solutions, but not clear on any of them or how they differentiate other than one of them has an odd looking diverter down in the cavity. A 964 3.6 engine I have on the floor has no cooler on the block and the t'stat cavity is empty. Would be delighted with an explanation with how this works and what is required. Thanks All, Bob Lane

Porsche used a thermostat bypass plug on the RSR's. Use the search and you'll find a lot of info.

Would you have a part number for that plug. What happens without the plug, too much pressure to the filter? I have an in line t'stat before the front coolers. Thanks, Bob

We're building my 2.8L but I think I'm going to keep the engine mounted cooler.. this is a street car, has a carrera cooler up front too.

Take a good look at the block threads for the thermostat studs -particularly if you have a mag case.
At some point in my 74 engines life "someone" over tightened the nuts securing the thermostat. One day, I was passing, ran it to redline and a huge cloud of blue smoke appeared in the mirror. The studs pulled out of the block, allowing the thermostat to pop up, dumping most of the oil on top of the engine and back of the car. Glanced at the pressure gauge, still had pressure, and shut it down. That was a fairly expensive mess to clean up. Good luck, chris |
The RSR thermostat replacement permanently direct oil oil of the block. Intended to be used with old factory racing filter that they put on the air cooled racecars. If you’ve removed the cooler and blocked that off, the RSR part won’t work for you.
Was it the 964 that didn’t have a cooler or a filter mounted on the engine? Get whatever they used for that model to replace the thermostat. |
Yes, the RSR had I recall, that off world looking filter with fins and numerous articulations located where the stock cooler would go on a street car. There are 2 outlets in the t'stat cavity, one toward the cooler and another into the oiling galleries for the engine. If the cooler is blocked off, it would appear that the oil has no place to go but to the engine and looking at the oil flow diagram, it seems to verify that. Looking into the t'stat cavity of 964 3.6, (that cavity is empty) there is only one outlet, due I guess to not having an on board cooler to serve. The 964 had the filter in the engine bay. The 965 had a filter console where the on board cooler would have been.

So my understanding at this juncture, is run the t'stat cavity empty,, cap it off with a lid from a 964 and the oil flow and pressure should be in order. If anyone sees a fallacy in this thinking, please speak up. Thanks again, Bob

I think you are correct. The 964 had a cap where the thermostat goes. The pressure sending unit and switch are mounted in that cap. Other option is a filter in place of oil cooler.

I thought the 964 had the filter in the engine bay. The 965 does not. Did they change the filter location during the run of 964s?

The 965 used this part. It is the preferred part for race engines as the filter at an angle is easier to deal with. It also has the block off for the air flow.

need it on my engines. I understand that it is on the pressure side which has that benefit, but I. I think that piece new is 350- 450 and I need tires right now. Thanks

I keep hitting a wrong button, but my last remark was going to be that I know a number of successful and competitive cars that do not run that secondary filter. Thanks for the input. Bob

More filtration and more air to cool the engine.

Well, there is no way around tires, you have to have them. If I hung everything on my car that I was told was essential, I would never make it to the track. I appreciate the time and merit of the contributors to this site. A wealth of personal experience is shared here and I salute Pelican for providing us with such a conveyance.
