3,4 EFI Engine oil cooling question.
I need some advice on oil cooling on a 3400 cc engine I am building . Estimated bhp would be around 280 . No oil cooler on engine . Oil lines run under the car . Will a Carrera 3,2 oil cooler be enough . This is a road car and will be used in a moderat hot .clima . Any advice would be appreciated.

I can't imagine that you will not need an on board cooler as well as the fender cooler at the least.

The 964/993 with less power needed two fender coolers......

On my 964 which is mostly stock, hot cams and tune and fresh rebuild. The stock cooler which is larger than the carrera cooler and has a big fan did ok around town and idle hot weather once i changed the trigger temp for the fan. That engine makes 265 wheel.
However on the track was another issue... i added a 2nd oil cooler in the ac position, a kit made by ruf. Now it runs rock solid 180-200, always. Even on very hot days. Oh and still has functional ac. A carrera cooler with a fan may be ok. You may need to supplement depending on your driving style. |

Having more cooling than you "need" is better than not enouhg
As Spyrex pointed out, having more than you need allows the thermostat to regulate the oil temp, just like almost all water cooled cars.

I am putting a 3.4 into my build, I have come close enough to overheating issues with my previous 3.2 SS in a early chassis that I am going to do everything I can to make maximal use of the two coolers I expect to have (engine mounted and front fender).
It appears one of the major issues for the front cooler is that you manage the airflow, particularly leakage of air around the cooler. On my 3.2SS I originally did not have the foam seal nor the bottom sealing plate to ensure as much air as possible flows through the actual cooler, once I did that, things improved. On the 3.4, that area will be buttoned up with good sealing, good inlet (it is a backdate so I am using the horn grilles as one input, plus some widened louvers/slots to ensure good air in, and then once in, the only way out is through the cooler. I also am putting in a higher spec SPAL fan, lower temperature switch backed up with a manual switch....all of which I am hoping will keep things under control. I think it is an issue as these cars essentially are oil cooled....and hot oil is hard to cool due to its natural self-insulating qualities. Dennis |

A Mocal 72 row front oil cooler fits best behind a 964 nose piece, lots of clearance for airflow, BIG oil lines and BIG fittings.
