Sealing engine tin...how important is it?
I just pulled my 1979 930 motor, and I noticed a few elliptical holes in the engine tin that were not being used, on the drivers' side.
I would guess that these were used for the original smog/emissions stuff that is long gone. Anyways, I was planning on stripping and repainting my tin anyways...should I seal these unused holes up on the engine tin to ensure controlled airflow? I'm already planning on replacing the engine compartment / tin seals as well as the orings for anything passing thru the tin. |

Yeah, and that rear piece has the hole for the air pump, which I guess you are not using.
Back in the day those pieces were readily available at the dealer. I would try to find the correct, no holes, versions. I see some used ones on ebay and I bet it comes up here on the Parts for sale forum from time to time. Pelican may have them new in the parts catalog, but I can't locate it with their "wonderful" search tool. You could always weld and patch, but for the money, you may as well do it right IMO.

If I recall, both hoses for the wastegate ran thru the round holes, and both had round orings. The two elliptical holes were not being used. Engine isn't original to the car so I wouldn't be surprised if this is incorrect. |

I'm not sure. 930s are above my pay rating.
![]() Now that I think about it, that rear piece on my SC did not have a cutout like yours. It just had a bump out on the bottom to clear the pump. It is not that hard to change that rear piece later, at least it isn't on my NA car .

I don't think it's super critical to seal it up completely but why not do it as good as possible if they are out.
I think there are 2 ways to do it. Patching it up really nice and invisible or cutting out a block off plate and tacking it in there so its clearly visible and reversible. I've done the latter.

I have some thin metal to block those extra holes off with that should be pretty easy to make invisible.
