Your mailbox is full so here's the message: I posted a message in the engine rebuild section that has a link to an image of the rear (pulley end) of an engine with the nose bearing and crank pulley seal exposed. I suggest you clean up the area around the crank seal and the number 8 nose bearing (the silver part with the notch in it) well so there is not any oil remaining. You need to remove the crank pulley to do this properly. Then get some diaper powder, put some in your hand and blow it over the entire crankshaft and pulley seal end so it is all lightly coated with powder. Carefully wipe off the end of the crankshaft and reinstall the pulley and fan belt. Reinstall the console and rear engine mount and run the engine for 5 minutes. Wear hearing protection; if the car is located where loud noise would be objectionable then reinstall the muffler before running. Carefully strip down and remove the pulley once more, taking care not to touch or disturb the area around the seal. Look for tracks in the powder to show the origin of the oil leak. If the tracks originate from the interface between the number 8 nose bearing and case then the nose bearing o-ring or case sealant in that area has failed and the case must be split to fix. If the leaks are coming from the ID or OD of the crankshaft pulley seal (reddish-orange colored ring in the linked image) then you can pull the seal and replace it with the engine in the car. The crankshaft pulley seal is most likely leaking from the ID, where the crankshaft rubs on it. If per chance the crankshaft is scored where the seal rubs on it a new seal may not help but I do not think this is likely. Good luck, Jim |

Wayne's pic and your description provided exactly the info I was missing. Will do the diagnostic test this weekend, hopefully. If it is the crankshaft pulley seal, the Porsch tool P-216 is required to fit the new seal, right? Is it OK to clean up the shaft and bore with scotchbrite prior to fitting the new seal?
