Cross Compatibility Reference for Engine Parts

Hey engine gurus!

Sorry if this is kind of a stupid question. I'm wondering if there is a good reference book or source out there that shows compatibility of engine parts between the various generations of 911 engines as well as general part number reference.

For example: Between first gen engine package 2.0 through 2.7 and the 3.0 through 3.2 (or even later, for that matter!) what is compatible between them? Rotating assembly components, cylinder blocks, heads, covers, inductions, ignition, fans, oil system components, etc. etc.

I know the list is probably pretty long, so I'm assuming there must be a "must have" publication or reference guide out there. Can someone clue me in? I didn't see a thread when searching on overall compatibility across the various generations of engines, but I'm assuming there MUST be, though.

EDIT: I guess I should have also asked if Wayne's book covers all these numbers and compatibility in-depth or does it just generally outline these topics?

Thanks for any help. I appreciate all the great knowledge here, as usual!

S

I discover what parts trade with different vehicles is I go on autozone.com look into the part I need. Look down and search for vehicle fitment. That will give you a rundown of each and every vehicle that that part was introduced on. An incredible model is I required an idler pulley that was utilized on several unique vehicles everything from a Chevrolet to a Volkswagen utilizes a similar part.

Hello,
Thanks for the response. Honestly never through of doing that. I didn't figure they would ever show compatibility for an item they don't stock. Like for example timing chain covers or camshafts. Gaskets I could see.

I guess that's kind of what I'm looking for, though. Like if I had an early 2.2 or 2.4 liter mag case motor and wanted to see what else the cams from that engine would fit in or what year cylinders, heads, etc. would fit on this engine. Or if I had a 3.2L what parts from a 2.4 or 2.7 were carried over or could bolt on. JUST examples.

If there's not a database or cross reference book out there, that's okay. Just wondering if there is. Just trying to further educate myself on the various part changes between generations, what carried over, what didn't, what bolts on, what doesn't.

Thanks guys. Sorry if this is silly. Hopefully the question at least makes sense.

Did you go to the Porsche classic website and download the full parts catalog in pdf form.

I have several models and can see what part numbers are used and then see if the same is used in another.

And you can search on pelican parts to see what models that part can fit.

It's probably going to sound like I've been living under a rock, but I guess I have to come out from under that rock sometime. HA! Is this the site you are referring to:

https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/

Was not aware. I'll have to take a look. Sounds like what I might be after. Thank you!

Yes. You can get a pdf of each major model. The output is from their PET program the dealers use. I have found early 911/914 and 924/944 part interchangeablity with my SC

There are many people on this site that have the book you are looking for, problem is its connected to there neck.

Like Fred says befriend reputable Porsche guys with decades of Porsche in there blood and regularly bring them beer and lunches. They will probably know the answer to many of the questions of compatibility off the top of there heads.

Haha! Perfect solution! I wish there were more of them around here. I've touched base with a few very cool people and they've been helpful for sure! Even had some luck with affordable parts as I can swing it. Thankful for those I've met!

So there IS a "book"!! What is this book you refer to?!

LOL, read the first sentence of my qoute and think about it.

If you look in the 911 technical forum there is a good example of parts interchangeability that obviously Porsche would never tell you about where someone was asking for a part # for a 930 scavenge pump fitting that was damaged. Unforetunately that fitting was never sold as a spare part and no one had an immediate answer, but fortunately for the O.P it did not take but a day or so and he had an answer to his problem. Turns out that a fuel filter outlet fitting works perfectly.

The name of thread is - Need help finding a fitting or part number
It was posted by gsxrken on 6-17 and "IF" there was a "BOOK" this is the type of info that would be in it.
