newbie 911

Hello all... I recently bought a 1976 with a 80sc motor in it. It has been sitting for quite a while so was planning on taking it apart and at least re-sealing the motor. Well, I have started to do that and found out that i had alusil cylinders. I dont know what do do now. I was planning on just re-ringing and then giving it a go. What should i do? I dont know if i should go ahead with the re-ring or bye nikasil....any help would be great. I am only twenty so my budget isn't huge. I really had to scrap to get this car. I have wanted one ever since i was about 5.

Well if you are careful and the rings are in good shape you may be able to get what you want.
First change the oil and filters. Check the compression. Turn over the engine without the plugs and see if you get oil pressure. The fuel system may need refreshing, ie leaking injectors. IF everything looks good, go ahead and fire it up. Fix any oil leaks that may happen. Check the compression again. IF ok I would run it for a while, keeping very close tabs on oil consumption, and leaks. Change the oil and filter after a few hundred miles. At this point it should be shaping up as a winner or looser.

In my opinion you might as well try as the downside is the same, ie rebuild the thing. As long as you do not screw up the crank or some major component you shouldn't loose by trying.

Hey there 80sc man.....
I might as well beat Wayne Dempsey to the punch here
You *do* have a copy of his new Engine Rebuilding book, don't you?
If not, get it. Your very questions are answered specifically in the book, as are hundreds of others.
Treat your 3.0 right!
