I need head!
Sorry for the sexual reference, couldn't contain myself. Anyhow, i am going to have to pull the heads off my 3.0 sc motor as i discovered that someone put in a port and polished head on one cyclinder and not the others (i got a stock replacement off of ebay). Plus, i broke four exhaust studs "please porsche god, do not strike down on me with all your wraith upon my undeserving body." So now i am wondering since they all have to come out now, should just have the machiner do a full head job on all six, guides and studs? Or just the ones needing repair, 4 out of 6 i think? And one more question, what does a bad valve look like (besides the ones that fly out the side of your engine after seizure)?

All the heads need to be done. Mininum of matching height of heads so the cam tower dosen't get tweeked. Heads must come apart for inspection. The cost of gringing a couple of more valves and seats should be very minimal.
Good valves do not have worn stems, which must be measured to determine their condition. They must have good margins, and they must not have any pits or burnt spots. THey must not be warped, another measurement. The guides must not be worn and finally the seats must not be pitted or burned. The valve springs should probably be replaced if there is more than 50k miles on the engine or their original use is unknown. I would not port heads used in a street engine as they are real good to begin with. Use solid copper, self locking nuts on the exhaust when you put it back togather. That way they will never sieze up on you. |

Thanks for the advice, i guess i'll have the machiner do a complete job on all six. I am trying hard to stay away from half assing this project while staying within my budget. Thanks again for the reply!

I've got all of this info in Chapter 3: http://www.101projects.com/rebuild.htm . You probably want to read that before you spend a chunk of $$$.
