Replacing tensioner arm dowel pin
Does anyone have the process for replacing the pivot pin (Dowel Pin #996-010-117-53) on a 996. This is the pin which the crank /IMS chain tensioner arm swings on. I assumed it is pressed in but what is the best method to remove? Should it be done like removing guides in a head by machining off the step and pressing out in the direction it was installed?

Use a dowel pin puller set. Cal-Van makes a set that works better than the slide hammer style.

if it was MY car, and nobody was watching
I would take one of my channel locks and adjust it enough to grab the pin but not mar it and clamp it on the pin and use of of my small ball peen hammer to knock it out. It might take a few times to get it moving. I am admittedly a shade tree wrench turner ![]() ![]() ok, I've thought about it a little more the chain tensioner pins in the cam housing on my 76 are most definitally pressed in interferance fits. They are not meant to be removed. you may consider putting the part in an oven and heat soak to 250 and then take it out and use a piece of ice just on the pin and then try to pull it out |

I have located the part so it is replaceable. I will try to see if I can get a dowel puller. It has a clip on one end which I could put a sleeve on to give a lip to pull on with some heat and cold.

For $10 I ordered the pin. Final answer is the new pin has a taper as well . They are machined to be thicker in the center by around 0.010"
