2.0L and 2.4L performance rebuild questions

Ok, here's the deal...I have an original 914-6 2.0L engine and a '73 911 2.4L engine (7R case I believe). The 2.0 has already been rebuilt and the 2.4 is disassembled. I am thinking of rebuilding the 2.4 (needs new exhaust valves and guides and new cams) and I am wondering 3 things:

A) What are my best (economical) options for rebuilding this 2.4 to get the most horsepower for the lowest price without sacrificing road driveability and reliability?

B) If I decided to go back with the 2.0, are there economical options for increasing horsepower?

C) Who can do this work in the Midwest (Indiana area) for a reasonable price?

Thanks guys!

The 2.0 is somewhat limited in it's capability - the best upgrade for that engine would be the installation of the 2.2 P&Cs on it for an instant HP upgrade.

You can make the 2.4 into 'S' specs. This would include:

- Regrind to 'S' cam specs
- "S' Pistons
- Head porting (semi-optional)
- Carb rejetting (I'm assuming you're using Weber 40s)

Midwest? Brad Mayeur (sp?) does a lot of 4-cylinder engines for 914s, I'm not sure if he's a 911 guy...

Trent,
There is a guy selling a good set of 2.0 S heads on EBay right now and no bids yet. Below is a link to the auction.

I just bought the S cams from him on a separate auction. He told me that he also sells performance pistons cheap (or you could pick up a set from JE). With the heads and pistons, you could easily get another 30+ hp.
I had a similar situation to yours a few months ago. I was thinking of rebuilding my 1967 2.0 normal engine, but couldn't find any S P&C's, heads or cams. After almost a year of looking, all of a sudden there were two sets available. The set of heads on EBay right now is the other set which came up right after I bought the first set. I paid $800 for my heads which is probably a little much, but they are in excellent condition.
Many complain that the early 2.0 litre S engines are "peaky". All early S's are. That's what makes them fun. It goes from a mild mannered street car to runaway go cart in 3 seconds and from 3,500 to 7,000 rpm's. That being said, I currently have a 2.4S+ engine which I had rebuilt from my 2.4E that's now in my 67 911. It is a rocket. E pistons, ported polished and flycut 2.4S heads, and hi perf/ mild race cams running on IDA 40's. It is amazing fastand all my friends with S's are amazed at this engine. It is an S eater.

As everyone says, the secret to hp is in the heads so you should really consider the porting and polishing option even if it involves more money. If it's done by someone who knows what they are doing, it is as good as any performance upgrade you will think about making to your engine - and were not talking 5-10 hp mod's like two pipe mufflers or K&N's. More like 20%.
A good set of pistons and cams helps too!

Good luck.
