Where is molybdenum in our engines?

I do oil analysis relatively frequently on my motor... In a recent anlysis moly went up to 13ppm from the typical 0-3ppm. Any idea where it might come from?

A few years ago I had a bump in titanium from very low levels (0-2ppm) to around 25ppm. Only place I knew that my motor had Ti was on valve retainers and could not figure out why they would be "wearing". Turns out I had a broken inner valve spring and it must have been scraping retainer.

...So, I like to check these things out. basic run down of motor.

964 crank
carillo rods
mahle 3.8 p/c
993 heads
factory and Intervalve valves
ebs race springs w ti retainers
solid factory rockers in 993 cam towers
daugherty cam
running brad-penn 20/50

Chrome molybdenum is a common steel valve spring retainer material. Did you change out those Ti retainers for steel by any chance?

Send a message via AIM to brighton911
And there we have the value of having an oil analysis done.

MOLYBDENUM (Mo) sources:

Piston rings, synchro rings, oil additives, greases, solid additives (anti-friction), internal coolant leak.
