911 SC - Time for a rebuild

There is oil leaking from the heads on to the exhaust. I am thinking some studs are broken. Back oil cooler is leaking as well. I want to take the engine out and do a top end as well.

I am looking for opinions on othwr work I should do (i.e., check chain tensioner, throw out bearing, etc.). i am looking for advice from anyone that has done a good sealing job on their 3.0 911.

THX

Before you remove the motor, please remove the valve covers and see if the studs are broken. It will be very obvious. Pay special attention to the lower studs. I would look at the studs before deciding whether or not to pull the motor.

There are ways to take out the back cooler, but this is likely not the issue. There are two other parts above the oil cooler that have been known to leak and drain down your internal oil cooler. You can remove the CIS (it is posible if not easy) with a partial engine drop and replace the parts/seals. They are very, very cheap. Be very careful to remove all nuts and washers so as not to drop anything into your intakes.

Let us know what you find when removing the valve covers. This would be my first option. If the studs are all in good shape, you can adjust the valves while you are in there.

Oil pressure switch and engine mounted thermostat o-ring are the prime candidates. Also, the breather housing gasket and breather hose (if old and hard) can be the cause of oil leaks in this area. The cause of the oil cooler leak if it really is leaking is likely it's seals (there are three) to the case; but an oil pressure switch or thermostat o-ring leak can look like an engine mounted oil cooler leak too. Cheers, Jim

I'll strongly second the suggestion that you check these things out before reaching a decision to disassemble your engine. If you have no broken head studs (there should be 24 head stud barrel nuts under your four valve covers), then you probably do not need to consider a rebuild. The leaking from heads could also be those four pesky oil return tubes. There are replacements for them that can be installed without engine disassembly.
