88 3.2 carrera engine drop
Car has 100k and time for guides I think and some oil leak repair. Question on aluminum
coupler for shifter. Do I take 2 bolts in tunnel off or go to rear and pull pinch bolt? Looks like pinch bolt sets rod length. Also backup switch has two wirres that appear to be soldered. Do they just pull out of switch? Could not find info in Bentley or Dempsey. tks for any help. |

Remove the single bolt from the coupler and wiggle the coupler off the trans shift rod. The reverse switch loom can be left in place. Unbolt the slave from the trans and set it aside. (You can lower the engine and trans enough to reach over the top of the engine and remove and replace the slave). Saves a lot of hassle.

The "bullet' ends of the wires pull out of the backup switch. Have a look at some pictures of a backup switch on line.

Either pull the speedo sender off the trans or disconnect the spade connectors next to the shifter coupling and push the rubber grommet through.
While the eng/trans is out, take a look at the through-tunnel fuel line connectors near the fuel pump. If they are weeping, then now would be the time to replace the fuel lines with the engine out.

Very small pliers with "bitey" jaws will crack them loose. I assume you mean the 2 phillips screws on the tab at the engine end of the cruise cable,

I don't know the particular location of these screws and their accessibility. But one good way of freeing such stuck screws before stripping the head, is to insert the correct Phillips head - from a set of pieces - not a complete screwdriver. Then if you have room, give the inserted piece a decent whack on the end with a hammer. A sharp crack. Usually breaks the threads free and you have applied no torque to the head.

Small vice grips on the outside, while twisting the screwdriver at the same time.

John Walkers Shop. We seem to think alike, that was my next step but thought I would
ask first. I used to be Honda m/c dealer and same tricks apply. I am of German decent but am starting to not like my fellow germans. These cars are a ***** to work on. Anyway thanks again for the help guys. Motor out today I hope. |
