88 carrerra teardown surprize

Disassmbling my 88 Carrera for vavle guides I think and found a nice little surprize
with fan shroud. I know it's magnesium and the crack is not through the shroud. No
sign on inside. Can this be repaired or fixed by some method? Everthing is smooth
and seems to work fine. Pic attached

I'll bet if you look at the vanes connecting the outer ring to inner part, you will find more cracks.

Ben can weld them [most of the time] but those later Carrera ring are made of some pretty funky material. Even if you can weld it, you generally end up with a melted licorice weld.

I recently had a machinist friend mill out a 901 housing to match the depth of a cracked carrera housing and he had to stop a couple of mm short of the total depth of 4.25" because the 901 hsg is a bit more tapered on the outside bottom of the alternator support center hub than the carrera hub, which has more meat there. Worked fine, No noticeable belt/pulley misalignment.

Yes. He’s an expert on welding steel, mag, alum, etc.

I'll post video later this evening showing what John found when he pulled mine out. For sure had a similar crack as shown by OP as well as MANY other cracks all over the place. Looked like it had been in a wreck... Mine is certainly beyond the scope of repair. In a "budget-less" world, I'd have gone for that beautiful Rennline unit.
