New 911 SC Engine Price in 1979

My '79 SC engine was damaged in return shipment from a complete rebuild. The insurance company is insisting on the original engine cost in 1979. They will adjust to 2023 $$. I've tried Porsche, Porsche Classics, Google...no luck.

Anyone have a pointer to share?

I would talk to an attorney, cost in 1979, even with inflation is not likely to get you an engine at today's prices ..

Historical, a replacement 911 engine was priced around 75% of the MSRP of the car.
Sounds random but I believe it is fairly accurate.

How badly was it damaged? Can it be rebuilt again with new parts to replace what was damaged? If so, then they should pay that cost.

That is laughable, probably to minimize outlay of cash in hopes you'll accept it and go away. Used, running 911SC engines fetch multiple times that amount. A quick search on this forum can confirm that. A rebuilt one is obviously worth more. Do some research, it won't be hard to find substantially higher numbers.

Assessing the damage is worthwhile. If not major, it might be fixable for a reasonable cost.

Tell insurance you want $30,000.

Send it back to the original builder and have him give you an estimate to repair.
Insurance should cover your loss minus any deductible.

In the early eighties we inquired about a complete 930 engine(for Randy Lanier LOL) from Porsche and it was almost as much as the car. IIRC they wanted around 48k and at that time new grey market cars were in the 50-60k range.

I went up in my loft and dug out one of my old Porsche price list books in paperback dated 1995 and here is some info on your question.

Assuming your SC was a 930.04 US/CDN model the part number for a complete replacement engine is 930 100 204 00 retail price in 1995 was $38,748.56 which is substantially more than what a new SC was in 79.

While this does not answer your question to the replacement cost in 1979 is does give some insight in to how ridiculous the price was for a complete engine. For a better reference as to the cost of a replacement engine during the current model year look at the prices for 993 engines, average $ was in the 55k range and at that time a new 993 was in the low to mid 60k range depending on options.

Some of the prices aren’t as bad percentage wise when you move into the later turbo engines but don’t seem to make any sense.

A 1994 M64/50 3.6 had a retail of 68k while a 1991/92 M30/69 had a retail of 72k
IIRC 1994 3.6 where in the 110k range new and 1991/92 where in the 102k range depending on options.

Not sure if any of this info will help in your situation but that’s my 2cents.
