What to do? Disassembled and confused

I decided to take apart what I thought was a 2.4L 1972 and do a rebuild. While taking it apart, I noticed a few issues, like all the spring shims on one head were on one side and none on the other. Strange materials were used to try an seal the case bolds.

Today I started catalogue numbers and found that only the case is from 1972. The crankshaft is from a 2.2L engine and the connecting rods are from a 2.0 engine. At this point I am quite confused and unsure what to do. I have already ground the crank to fix issues so I am into it but do I continue? The engine was running poorly when I took it apart but it had not been started for quite a while.

Any input would be appreciated.

Might be a good starting point for a short-stroke project. Hope crankshaft is from an 2.2 S (counterbalanced) ? I would recommend to do a full inventory and check all critical parts first in case some have been modified from stock.

Our cars are old enough that engines have been apart multiple times, swapped out, etc. Sounds like yours is a mongrel. Nothing wrong with that. As suggested, inventory and check everything, and make sure the parts work well together. See what heads you have (hopefully 2.2 or 2.4L). Also check the pistons. The shorter stroke can be fine - you'll want to make sure the pistons give enough compression though.
Strange about the valve spring shims, but that will sort itself as check and adjust everything during your rebuild.
You have probably read about this already, but you'll want to have that crankcase checked and measured by a machine shop that is familiar with 911 engines. The mag cases tend to distort and will probably need some work before putting back into service.
Good luck with your build!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the 2.2 is an S.

thanks for the reply. I am just becoming aware of the amount of swapping that has gone on. I'll have a good accounting of everything before it goes back together. I forgot to mention that the thrust bearing on the crank was .25 undersize and overheated. It melted a bit from the looks of it before it wore in.
