Sealing rocker oil splash tubes in the cam housings - how ?
replacing rocker oil splash tubes. I read on an old post they should be sealed to to ensure correct oil distribution along the tube to all of the rockers . But how may this be done ? Whit what kind of sealant and how to apply sealant safely ? I will of course test flow distribution on the bench first and this only becomes actual if there is an issue. But very interested in any advice on how to seal if anyone can help please ?

I hope this isn't true, because I didn't do it...

don't know if it true either as i have not found any info on how. Taking that as an indication that it is not done by most.

’m in the middle of my 3.0L overhaul and just removed the oiling tubes in the cam towers. The only thing i’m going to seal the end plugs I removed. The oil comes into the tower via the hose from the case. The oil enters into a cavity where the end of the tube begins. Oil is feed to the rear cam bearing, and also down the oil spray tube and along the tube are holes which direct spray oil the upper cam rockers. Oil supply continues toward the forward cam bearing. The only place oil can exit other than the described flow, is around where the two ends of the tubes protrude into the casting. I’m thinking the flow loss is minimal. The gap around the tube is maybe the same area as a single spray hole. A leak at that point is just another oil squirter.
What do you think you need to seal? |

Same thing for the case halves, 574?

No sealant is required. Just make sure the squirters are clocked properly.

I just thought of a way to more accurately aligning the tube. A tight fitting drill bit could site in the clocking of the tube when starting in the tower. 90 degrees from the sealing plane of the plug fitting hole in the tower. Last edited by porschedude996; 08-24-2023 at 07:43 AM.. |

I’m thinking of some sealant on the Plugs. Maybe a bearing mount loctite. I’ve got a dozen types of loctite. Or some epoxy like porsche sealed the steel shafts in the chain cases.

installed new spray bars without applying any sealant (except on the end plugs). And tested flow distribution. It looks fine fine strong flow out the tiny holes and no obvious leaks along the tube inside the housing

Good job trond. What fluid did you use to test the flow?

i use red spirit to test with. A pressurized garden spray can and hose to banjo bolt. Very easy to do

In jest for some fun: Ok, what Red Varietal Wine pairs with a Porsche? Something on the “Lighter Side”? Maybe something “Crisp”? I very partial to Pinot Noir‘s. We have a huge amount of wine makers in the Central Coast of California. Pinot Noir grapes going among the hills as I drove to work. |

Ok, just ethanol alcohol. I think i’m not going to test at all. With the end plugs out, I should be able to see straight through. I know they are clean. Loctite on the plugs after they are started in the cam tower, and a little epoxy on the end to seal like Porsche did on the chain boxes and case.
