There is extensive thread and recommendation to use Threebond 1104……..however it appears it has been superseded by 1184 from search I did.
Does anyone have input/experience with 1184?

I believe the update is mentioned in the ultimate sealant thread or whatever it’s called. Pretty sure people just migrated to using 1184, but keep me honest and verify.

You are correct.
1104 had lead in it so was discontinued. Superseded by 1194 then 1184.
Never realized so much research was necessary……but also funny….common comment was sealing surface cleanliness most important element of the process.

Acetone is your friend.

Just call them 11 series and 12 series threebond, since the numbers change so often.

11 series is thinner for metal to metal joints.

12 series is thicker and more for replacing a conventional gasket.

We are 20 engines into 1184, no issues.

Most sealants work for awhile. The real proof is whether they still hold after, say, 50,000 miles. Most of us will never know...

But I'm pretty sure the 1184 is at least as good as it predecessors.

The real proof is that billions of cars and motorcycles have used three bond RTV or its derivations or equivalent to seal up engines and transmissions for 30+ years now.

Was simply stating we have had Zero issues with the change from 1104 to 1184.

That said, we still use Loctite 574 on cam towers, because we had one engine years ago that leaked with the 1104/1184 on the cam towers. But, as you can see from the myriad of threads (and you seem to be in the industry) that every builder has their favorite sealants they used to reduce the risk to their reputation and limit the chance of a comeback, all based on our/their experience....
