All 2.7 Cranks Counterbalanced?
Are all 2.7 cranks counterbalanced? Seems I read somewhere about some motors having non-suitable non-counterbalanced cranks. The motor I am looking at is maybe a '77 with 3R cases.
Any way to tell from the outside what ports it might have etc? And which crank? There is still some FI stuff on the motor but the model it came from is unknown. From prior communications I think it is a base motor but don't know. Owner is deceased. Been sitting many years in dry storage. I believe it still turns by hand. TIA!

All 2.4-2.7 cranks are counterbalanced. You need to post serial # to identify. 77 would have 7R-7R case, 3R would be like 72-73 2.4. Again serial # and type # would help.

Some 2.0L engines had non-counterweighted cranks. Perhaps that's what you read.

Engine serial number will tell you what year and what it was installed into.

Is there a decipherable code for the serial numbers so I can make a judgment call on the spot regarding this motor? I was told it is a 77. That’s all I know. And that it’s been sitting a long time.

There are threads here with series of engine numbers, but the easiest thing to do is type "Porsche 911 engine (number)" into your browser and see what it brings back.
