3.2 to 3.4 smog question
I have an 89 Carrera I was thinking of upgrading to a 3.4 with 964 cams
Does anyone know if it will pass CA smog? I know there are quite a few factors but can it be done? Brad |

Brad: It should work. A simple increase in displacement of that small an amount will not upset the Motronic, since it operates in closed loop (using the O2 sensor) during the test cycle and will adjust mixture for minimum emissions. The 964 cam should also be fine, because it also passes smog in the 964 engine. That's if you stick with the stock PROM chip. If you go to an aftermarket chip, that introduces more variables.
But, let's wait and see if anyone here has added a 964 cam to a 1984-89 Motronic engine and passed smog with that combo. Another person you should check with is Steve Wong, who programs performance chips for these engines. He should tell you which of his aftermarket tuning chips will pass smog.
