Any Aussies want to sell their engine yolk?

Any Antipodeans finish their engine build project and have a yolk they don't need anymore? I've always supported Pelican when back in the States, but shipping here on a heavy item like that is prohibitive...

John, what engine are you supporting? Most of the guys I know (including myself) have gotten by fine with a generic yolk ($80 at Supercheap ) ... at least up to SC. I guess I'd be thinking differently if I was rebuilding a turbo.

Hi John, I was just up in Brissie for the day.


I have the 560Kg engine stand from Supercheap, and its got that 4-arm sliding mount. I understood from other posts that those are no good for supporting a 930, that you needed or shold have one of those that cradles the flywheel-housing part of the case. Mine's an 83 n/a.

Also, the studs protruding from the engine case are too short, so I'd have no clearance between the stand mount and the flywheel...here are some pics...check out the stud my finger is pointing to in the pic. Three of the studs (at 2:00, 4:00 and 8:00) are too short to protrude beyond the mounting arm sleeves. Only the top-left one is long enough to thread a nut onto.

I have also used a generic stand like Johnl. I cut the engine stand mount by 2 cm each, so that the mount touches the engine case. Worked perfectly!! I guess all the earlier engines are suitable for the generic mount. It didn't damage a thing.

Rebuilding one of these engines is expensive enough without having to pay a couple hundred of USD for a yolk.

Just bolt it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are supose not to use generic stands because the engine case are made of magnesion or aluminum and the studs can be easyly stripped. The reason is that the Porsche yoke have a groove that the engine fix and is that groove the area that support the engine weight. I buy a Mainely Custon by Design engine yoke ring and work perfectly. You use the standard yoke. It support a complete Porsche engine with no problems.

John, exactly that one... I removed the studs and went to Bunnings and grabbed some suitable bolts. However I like Hessel's idea better!

You are right about the yolk debate.... just do what you're happy with - suffice to say I've personally not found anyone who has had a generic yolk failure. Remeber the majority of the time the mount will be supporting a half built engine, so the weight isn't that much.

Oh, and Esmeril and hessel, I just re-read my message, hope I didn't come off too rude.

Given that I'll be spending so much time and money to get everything else right, I'd hate to crack a dropped case because I was trying to save a few dollars. I can just image the nearly-built load of several hundred pounds, and I'm cranking down on the something with 150ft/lbs of torque and "SNAP" goes one of the mounting bolts..."SQUISH" goes my foot...

No worries John. I understand were your coming from.

To be honest, if I could have found a used Yolk to buy or rent, I would have done that. But after an extensive search, no results.

I checked with a couple of Porsche specialist and they all told me the same story. For the earlier 911's, a generic stand, slightly modified, should suffice. For the Turbo or newer engine's (3.0 and newer) the special yolk becomes a necessity.

I have rebuild a 2.2 engine out of my '71 T and had no problems what so ever with stripping the mag case. Just bolt it on so that the mount is on the case. Some nuts on the engine studs and away you go.

But if you feel better with a special Yolk, do that. Rebuilding your engine should be fun in the first place.

Don't limit yourself to Porsche Guys, talk to any aircooled VW workshops/suppliers as the Yoke is the same

John JL there is no problem with me. For half engine weight I think that the standard universal yoke will work. I was thinking in a complete engine including the fuel injection system. Again, there is no problem. We are cool!!!

Here is my fully dressed 930 engine sitting on a universal stand. The rebuild took me 5 weeks I had no issues. I fabricated 1/4" aluminium spacers to protect the transmission lip. I only rebuilt the top end so there were always four bolts into the engine.
