Almost sent my motor to Motor Meister until I started reading some posts, p/u was schedualed for monday yikes. So now im back to the begining again. Does anyone know of a mechanic around mass or any were for that matter that can do a reliable rebuild for under 5k, or am I going to have to do it my self ? MM quoted me $4200 which is about all I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was hopeing to drive it at least once before it snows again.

Well at least you have $4200 and an engine that needs rebuilding, instead of $0, and, uh, an engine that needs rebuilding.
Good luck.

Book time on a 930 rebuild is over 40 hours, so any reputable shop or good mechanic is going to suck up almost all that money you have.
Do it yourself and that might be enough money to do a quality rebuild assuming that you can reuse the pistons and cylinders and the rest of the motor is in good shape. If your cylinders are shot then you are going to be in trouble since a set of cylinders is going to be about $3K. If you have not already seen it I have a bit of information about my own 930 engine project that is in progress on the following thread. Rebuilding My 930 |

with a first cabin rebuild on a 930 going for around $10K, what were you going to get for $4200? you could get wayne's book and DIY, or if you don't feel like you could pull it off, a shop could probably do a valve grind, rings, rod bearings and rod bolts for around what you want to spend. if the bottom end is still ok, that may be the way to go.

Right, get this book: http://www.101projects.com and make sure whether you actually need to rebuild your engine first.

Get the book and make sure that you really do need a re-build. Figure out what you really do need and price it around as a DIY. There are many people on the board to help (even if the trouble you have is stabbing the motor back in (my problem)). If nothing else, the book will make you an informed consumer!
And if you are not confortable with working on the motor yourself you could always ship to JW. He has an impressive reputation!!

nate930,
I was in the same boat as you about 6 months ago. 1977 3.0L 930 engine in need of a rebuild. I also found MM before comming to the internet to do a little research on them. After all of the horror stories I found a good machine shop (Ollies in CA) and purchased both of waynes books. They are well worth the price! Of course now my simple rebuild has turned into a full rebirth with EFI 3.2 P&C kit (great price on it...thanks Wayne) and new everything. Waynes Engine book is very well written and has given me what I needed to know to attemt this myself. Either way, before you decide on anything run it buy these guys here on the board.......they wont steer you wrong. |
