Concern over 3.2 rebuild, distributor gear orientation
Hi Everyone. Just got my long-block completed (I think) and noticed that distributor rotor is not pointing to #1 plug-lead at TDC. I pulled the distributor and tried adjusting the rotor to point exactly to #1 plug-lead (scribe mark on distributor body) but can either get it on one side of mark or on other side but not exactly. I'm guesstimating 20-30 degs (distributor angle) on either side. My first question, is this normal for rotor to be off by that much relative to scribe mark for #1? If so, is this taken care of by ECU in some way? BTW, the angle of the rotor is exactly at scribe mark if I rotate the pulley to the BTDC notch to the right of the TDC notch.
Now for my biggest concern, could the distributor gear be on backwards? See pic of my crank below. Armando at CCS rebuilt crank for me after a spun bearing and he also installed a new distributor gear for me. I don't remember checking this after I got the crank back from him. When I look at some pictures I took during the rebuild, the gear orientation matches what I see in Bentley p.130-10 but this differs from what is in the Porsche Carrera manual p.13-21. When I look closely at my crank, there is some writing stamped on brass gear and it's facing out towards the pulley. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Mike

That is the right gear to turn the distributor clockwise.
Sometimes you can miss the right tooth and it can be a challenge to line the distributor gear on the right tooth of the crank gear. Start with the distributor on the wrong tooth and pull up gently while twisting lightly so that you can feel when the gears clear, carefully lower the distributor making sure you aren’t skipping over a tooth.

Thank you for confirming that for me. I was a bit confused between pics in Bentley and in Porsche manuals. Looks like Porsche may have just used a previous photo with a LH rotation distributor.
I also revisited the pulling distributor out and tweaking until I finally got he rotor to line up with #1 exactly, so that was my bad. All the best

It should look like this when set.

You want it to be approaching the mark on the base, that is when you have ignition.
The brain runs all demands of the distributor. Bruce |

Thanks Everyone for the replies and advice. Now my rotor looks just like the picture you posted, just a little ahead of the notch.
What would I do without this forum. You guys are awesome
