Race 2.2 E

Hello all.

I am getting together an engine for a 70E race car..
We have a newly rebuilt 2.2E MFI pump and system, a set of new 2.2S barrels and pistons.

But wonder what cams we can use with the 2.2E pump please.

Also any other advice re heads etc..

Thanks.
David

There’s a lot of speculation on which MFI pump works with which cams. I’m not sure anybody really knows. I can offer my opinion though. I believe any pump can work with any cam, without getting it recalibrated. Why? Well, the pump is calibrated to inject fuel right before the intake valve opens. So you can determine how advanced or retarded the pump needs to be to inject fuel when you need it. Then simply make a new alignment mark on the pulley. Adjust the fuel mixture as needed to give the most power, and vroom vroom!!

This is only my opinion. On paper it seems logical, but who knows in reality!

Flame on!

David-
I recently talked with Gus Pfister at Pacific Fuel Injection about my motor and injection pump. In my case, I intend to use a 2.2E cam and pump, but with a displacement of 2.5L. Gus said that he thought this would work, but there may be a tendency for the motor to run rich at idle when properly adjusted for the high end. He said that if this was the case, he could make some internal adjustments that could help, but that the best bet is to stick with factory combinations (matched space cams with camshafts). It seems that there is a stronger relationship between space cam and camshaft than there is between spacecam and displacement. The spacecam is regulating the quantity of fuel injected at combinations of throttle position and RPM. I think that the proper quantity would be quite different for S and E and T cams. So, you might be able to get away with a Solex (early E) cam, but not much more. You didn't mention what heads you have, but if they are E heads porting would be necessary to realize the benefit of a more aggressive camshaft.
