993 Chain ramp tensioners - is it possible to install them in reverse?

Simple chain ramp question:

Is it even possible to put 964/993 tensioners in reversed (this is a late model 993 motor)? And if they were reversed, would it make sense that this type of damage to the chain ramp would occur? Or is there something else that could happen that could cause this?
