Wayne- Re-torqueing 930 Heads

Hello,
I am coming up to the 600 mile mark on my rebuild on my '85 930. What is the correct procedure for re-torqueing the heads, and is it necessary? Do you back them all off a half a turn and re-torque, or just check the torque value without backing them off? I have ARP head studs and nutz.

Did you use the anti-seize with them? If not, then any torque values will be suspect, as they will be a dry torque. Still, I would recommend torquing them up again. Don't back them up - just make sure that they are tight. Note - this is a highly debatable and subjective issue. When breaking in an engine, everything will tend to seat and set, possibly creating some looseness, especially on the magnesium motors. The last SC motor I rebuilt didn't need any turns after 1000 miles...

I used ARP head studs and their moly type lube that comes with them.

THe only moters that require retorqueing, say so in the mfg recommendations. This is due to head gasket considerations, nothing else. With a Porsche, no retorque is required, as far as I know. Thats because of the solid head gasket design, ie a copper gasket. If you do retorque them nothing will be lost. I would NOT suggest loostening them first. Just check them if you must. These type of gaskets are usually ment for ONE time use, that is DO NOT loosten them.
