				Guidance needed

I am looking at purchasing a 1968 911 with a 2.0 aluminum engine with webers. The main problems are that the owner believes that the piston rings are blown. He claims that it is fouling the cylinder and causing blow by through the crankcase. In addition he says that it had great oil pressure while he was driving it home from the incident and that he drained the oil and couldnt find anything metal in it.

I was wondering what you guys would suggest. What he said that he was planning on doing is to just replace the piston rings. I understand if I walk down this road once I tear the engine down this could lead to a host of other issues and shine light on larger issues. In the end I want to do an engine swap for a 3.2 but I would like something in the mean time that I could drive. The price on the car is decent. What I just wanted to know is if you guys feel that this would be a solution to the problem or am I just going to get really over my head with the nightmare that this is going to cause? Do you believe that if I am taking the engine down to replace the piston rings I might as well just do a full rebuild. Like I said what I would really like is to have a car that I could drive around untill I can at least get all the conversion parts for the 3.2. Thanks for all your help. David

I think that you should not plan on a quick fix for that motor. Go ahead and do the 3.2, and set aside the 2.0 (or just build the 2.0 thouroughly). I think that any engine work leads to a great deal of engine work. -Scott

Agreed. Not an easy fix. If you are going the 3.2 route then get the engine and the car together, and put your time towards reaching your goal. There's a 3.2 on eBay right now with all the needed conversion parts...

A 1968 2.0 with a blown engine can't be worth more than $2-$3K. My next door neighbor sold his 1968 Targa in excellent condition for $7K recently... -Wayne
