Left side disassembly

As some members may know, the 930 motor I purchased has 0 compression in #'s 1 and 2.

The luck is that the owner has honored his words about 'forever warranty until installed onto my 72 project.'

Anyway, he has planned on tearing down the left side to replace valves. I have read the book but there is no recommendation of tearing down the other other for timing, adjustment, etc. purposes.

Should we take down the right side also?

I should call PP soon (I bought my books at the German AutoFest) and I think I am missing the CD Wayne talked about in the 'read me first.'

I have never heard of doing half a valve job. I'm sure you'd agree this doesn't make good sense, but I realize you have a unique situation with your PO warranty. If it is burnt valves causing the compression loss, I guess it depends on how rigidly you and the PO define the warranty. Could mean he fixes only the minimum necessary to relieve the compression issues. Perhaps you can strike a balance and go in 50/50 on a valve job.

Rings could be to blame for this leak, and 930 motors have been known to hole pistons (especially when modified by the less-than-knowledgeable). Though, there'd probably be plenty more evidence if either of these causes was to blame.

In answer to your question, I would tear down both sides as a matter of course. This will also allow you to inspect your cams, cam sprockets, piston ring lands, rockers, cylinder/head sealing surfaces, and other wear items. You will also be able to do a seat-of-the-pants evaluation of your rod bearings; the so-called drop test. Good time to replace the front and rear crank seals, too.

If someone has a race motor, and then over-revs and trashes a valve, it's not uncommon to tear down one side. However, if both sides are old, it makes sense to do the complete rebuild.

Some books at the AutoFest were sold for $30 without the CD (normally $35 with the CD). If you want one, I can toss one in with your next order...

Wayne,

The race motor is newly rebuilt with <2.5K miles on it. Thanks for the reply. Now I can sleep better.
