Question bak 2 basics....TDC?

ok..here goes. everything i read states that i line up the "Z1" mark to the engine case joint, or the tick mark on the fan housing. i have rotated my '75 2.7L about 1017 degrees and i do not see this mark on the crankshaft pulley. am i looking at the right place? i see tiny double notches on the rim of the crankshaft belt pulley. (???).
ok, quit laughing...

cliff.

Nope, the notch on the right (if you see double notches) should be Z1. You can verify this by pulling the plug on #1 and looking in the hole, you should see the piston at the top of its travel. Alternately, you could forget about the notch, and look in the hole while someone else rotates the engine. When the piston is at its absolute highest travel and just about to go back down, your Z1 mark should magically present itself (and be lined up with the case parting line).

I don't find the notch on the fan housing to be 100% accurate...YMMV
