This thread has been done here before a few times, with different cars and work performed. Everyone's going to tender their $0.02 on whether you got raped or not. Then someone will chime in that it doesn't matter, you're probably not going to win the game of "He said/I said". Most posts will be peppered with "those are all easy jobs, get a copy of 101 projects and learn to do it yourself next time". Someone will invariably point out that this is posted to the wrong forum (this is the engine rebuilding forum). Everyone will welcome you warmly to the board and invite you to stay a while.
Cheers...

Thank you for your input. For future refrence; which forum should I post it to? BTW, I know these are straight forward repairs. Have you ever not had the time or space to do them?

Going off the top of my head - these times are close to what we charge at my shop. Most of the times have a "window" depending on how "roached-up" the assembly is.
New Axle Boot: About 1 - 1.5 hours. Oddly enough, depending on the labor rate, it is sometimes cheaper to just put in a new axle rather than to disassemble, clean, inspect, repack, and reassemble a CV - time to R&R a new axle - 0.5 hr. Heater Cable: 1 - 1.5 Hours (depends on how bad the cable and mounting hardware is) Valve adjust: 3.5 - 4.5 with engine in the car, 1.7 engine out of car R&R clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing, pilot bearing, change rear main seal, reinstall flywheel: 2 hours not including time to drop motor Oil leaks - Depends on where the leaks are - some are simple with engine in car, others are monsters. You should be able to get at most common oil leaks on the engine in 1 - 2 hours with the engine out of the car. The only leaks that are serious time with the engine in or out are: Chain box to case, cam seal, case leaks, & head leaks. Oil lines: 3 - 5 hours R&I engine\transmission 5 - 7 hours - depends on the model. Carreras normally run about 5.5 - 6.5 R&R intake gaskets - 2 hours out of car, about 3.5 - 4 with motor still in car. Few questions for you: If you have already paid to have the engine and tranny pulled, Why would you just replace the clutch disk? The few hundred dollars you save by not replacing the other components are lost if your TO bearing goes south 6 months later and you have to pull the engine again.. Why\where was your oil line leaking? The only ones I've ever seen leak are the result of physical damage - tire rub, collision, hitting an object etc. You should have some sort of "cause" and corrective action, or you will be revisiting this problem again. Shepmess,
I have no idea what he replaced when you say Intake Manifold gaskets. Since there is no Intake mainfold per se, this may be the source of the difference of opinion. Here is a drawing of the intake system, which part do you mean? If it was me, I would have your man explain how the cost got so high and tell him why you are concerned. Assuming he is honest, he will take the opportunity to educate you as to what he has done, why and how long it took. Sometimes seemingly simple tasks take longer than one would think due to the impact of the action.

Your diagram looks like an SC schematic. The 3.2 Carrera has gaskets both upper and lower which look like part # 7.

I hear you on not having time and space, most definitely! I still send a lot of work to the mechanic, especially non-Porsche related (just isn't as much fun to work on). Frequently the tasks escalate like yours have, and the final bill elicits a heartfelt "WTF???" from me. I'm blessed with a great wrench though, and when we look at each task they performed, the labor and parts always make senses. It's the snowball effect that sucks.
