Some Rebuild Costs for Australians

I thought some of you may care to know about the current costs of my RS replica rebuild... Remember this is Australian dollars (currently 74 US cents make an Aussie dollar)

I currently have a 69 2.0 running quite well behind a sportomatic gearbox, so I decided to buy an old 2.7 longblock sight unseen. The Alusil cylinders have been the bane of my budget as I just didn't want to use them in my rebuild.

So far...

Non running 2.7 longblock $2500, plus $100 transport.

Machine work to case $584. This was time certs, oil bypass, and machining of decks/flycutting through bolt holes/boring spigots.

Crank and rods $300 included magnaflux, big and little ends.

New chain sprockets on intermediate shaft $120

Heads $1188 including all new valves and seats, plus porting to 36mm (RS spec)

The BIG one $2941 to import brand new Mahle 2.7 RS p&c from Pelican. This included all duty and taxes and $110 customs broker costs. I learned a lot on this.... try not to import the legal way Get friend to send them individually or bring back as cabin luggage, and don't tell them how much you paid! The 3% duty is nothing, it's the GST/broker costs/electronic lodgement etc that gets you. Use a broker, it's just too hard on your own!

I still have to purchase all the assortment of bearings, hardware and sealers to begin the rebuild, carrera tensioners, and the assortment of other little things required.

I am reasonably sure I can bring the rebuild in under $10,000 but I will $4000 over budget estimates

I'll document/photograph the rebuild as I go. Probably start in February... I'll need to recover over the Christmas season!

John,
Best of luck. Don't compromise with part quality even if it takes a little longer.
Keep us posted.

Cheers Larry,

I can't seem to compromise even when I try! I'll be doing it "right" or not at all.

Larry,
What induction system are you going to be using, Webers or MFI? Also, are you going with a 915 gearbox or are you sticking with the sporto?
Never heard of a sportomatic RS...

John you mean ?

Staying with my webers, but changing jets and upping venturies to 34mm. Next project will be to rebuild a 915...

BUT in the meantime, the donor case was from a sporto so it has the sporto pump, plumbing, and mating studs... so yep, I'm going to run an RS/Sporto for a laugh At least for a while. The sporto was rebuilt by PO 5 years ago and has an upgraded stator and "flywheel" plate so I feel confident it will last another 12 months or so. It should make for a fun car at auto-x and standing starts

Oops,
Sorry John. Sounds like fun. I rebuilt my 2.4 911E engine to S/906 spec with 38mm ports and 906 cams on top of flycut ported and polished S heads and Webers. It's a runner.
Which cams are you going to go with on the rebuild? You may want consider something a bit wilder than S cams. Maybe a set of G40's!

G'Day John,

It's fun shelling out the $$$$$, isn't (not).
I've been through the same exercise myself, however the 3L SC pistons and barrells cost me over $4k, buying them from Mahle direct.

My rebuild is detailed at www.adelgigs.com/911sc.shtml

Good luck on the rebuild, and a word of advice, don't ever let on to the wife how much you have (and will) spend. Just smuggle in bits and pieces in over a period of time !!

Blau, you're engine must be a screamer!!

I've considered wilder cams, but I'm concerned about driveability...

Hi John,
I did have some problems with limited low end torque due to the larger ports and agressive cam profiles initially. However, my mechanic who has 35 years experience early 911īs and Webers was able to adjust the jetting and take out the flat spot below 2k rpm's. The engine is easily drivable on the street, but the moment I bring the rev`s above 4k, the engine turns into a wildcat. I am planning to dyno it in the next few weeks to find out exactly what the performance numbers are, but I expect the peak horse is between 210-220. I was driving around a few weeks ago and ended up in a little cat and mouse ride with a mid 80's carerra. He pulled away from me handily in the extended straight aways, but through most of the ride I held my own. Truth is that I was a little disappointed in my car, until I found out that he had a Ruf turbo and had 340hp at the wheel!
As for the G40 cams, they are a step above the S cams, but nowhere as crazy as 906 cams. With your larger displacement engine, G40's will still be managable for street use. In fact, I have heard of more than a few 3.0 SC guys going with 906 cams for extra street performance. Larger displacement engines can manage the more aggressive early race cam profiles better.

Mmmm, sounds interesting. I haven't really thought about cams until now. I'm certainly not going to use the crappy CIS cams that came with the engine, so I will check out a G40 when I begin my search.

Cheers
