Screen below crank ?

I pulled the sump plate on a '69E 2.0L I now have, and I see a large screen that runs below the crank and above the intermediate shaft. I've never seen that before. Is this factory ?

Yes, that screen was on 2.0 engines, and they removed it somewhere around the time that your car was manufactured. There's a photo of it somewhere in the Engine Rebuild book.

I was wondering about this myself. I've got a '72T with a 3R/4R case and it had the screens installed. The problem (maybe?) is that I just buttoned up the bottom end on my motor Sunday, and reinstalled the screens. I cleaned them thouroughly, but was wondering the whole time if they needed to be in there. Did I make a mistake? Should I remove the screens? I saw no mention of them in Wayne's book but thought that if they were in there, they must belong there.

I'd rather pull the cases apart now and fix the problem rather than risk any oil flow/pressure problems in the future.

Why do these *relevant* questions seem to pop up on the board about a day or two after I've just completed the work?

Hmm, i have this "screen" that is detachable. Its under the sump plate, you mean i don't need this??

No Zendalar, they're talking about the windage screen that's inside the engine. It's higher up inside the engine. You'll want to maintain the oil sump screen that's on your engine.

The windage screens are also installed on all the 2.4 motors I've been inside. I didn't put mine back in after seeing one disintegrate for completely unexplained reasons inside Tim's engine.

Super. Just the vote of confidence I needed, DTW! Now I'm faced with the dilemna of tearing the motor down to remove the screens or taking my chances with leaving them in place. Any more thoughts?

FYI, the motor is being built with 2.2E pistons, E cams and MFI. It will see plenty of track time (DE, autocross, and time trials) as well as frequent street use, so I want the thing to be bulletproof. Towards that end I've done all the recommended case mods and am doing my best to upgrade where ever possible.

Tim's motor had weird problems. Really weird. I couldn't see any purpose in putting them back in, and I think Tim's case was a one-in-a-million example. It didn't do any more damage than lightly marring a couple oil pump gear teeth. As long as you have been diligent in preparing the case and the screens were in good condition, you should be fine. Tim's motor had lots of nasty chemical reactions going on in his bottom end...

After having to tear down my motor b/c of that screen I don't trust them at all. I'll take the 5hp loss or whatever it is because they're not in there after what happened to my orginal engine. I do think my motor was a fluke though.

btw I'm building exactly the same engine(2.4 crank?) what's it like?

RIght - now I remember. Seems people with 2.2s and 2.4s also seem to sometimes have the screen, and I think I did look it up in the Porsche parts diagrams, and there does appear to be one there. Most people ditch it as unneccesary and sometimes dangerous (if they fall apart)...
