I have an '85 930 w/ an incomplete maintenance history. the car has 100K miles and I am contemplating a topend/valvejob/gearbox/clutch adventure. The car was recently taken through a PCA De and performed w/o problem. However, I am leaking/weeping from cam tower/chain rails as we as other spots. I do not know if the car has had this done previously; I have record of gearbox work at 45K. At the moment the oil situation seems to be more of an annoyance(losing a little more than 1qt/1000 miles. However, I don't want to cause more issues by delaying this procedure.
Also, I am considering upgrading to the K27 7200 turbo. Waht are your thoughts on this, and do you know of any options other than Evolution Motorsports? |

Run a compression and leakdown on the engine. Also read this:

My car was in similar shape at 100K miles.
Depending on the devil of the details you could have quite a few miles left before you need to go as far as tearing apart the motor. |

The 7200 is a great upgrade, especially if you have the stock unit! I would stay with the stock .8 spring unless you have an upgraded intercooler. A leak-down would give you some idea about head-condition. If the top end has never been apart then likely its due soon for at least valve guides.

I would say you can safely go around 1 bar in cool weather or when otherwise running cool as long as you have your fuel system properly tweaked to insure a rich mixture as well as concervative timing or a knock sensor/ timing control unit.
That being said a K27 and a cat bypass and/or performance muffler will do wonders for you. I start boosting around 2100 RPMs and can hit a bar a little over 3K and lag is almost completely non existant. Mine pretty much just has a boost controller, j & s knock sensor and retard unit, andial mixture enrichment unit, free flow muffler, no cat, K27 and ran about one bar of boost almost all the time (sometimes even more on chilly nights) for several years and over 70K miles. Upon teardown at 130K miles the engine was in excellent mechanical shape with the exception of lots of oil seepage, one broken head stud, a starter ring gear that lost a few teeth and a dead andial a/f adjustor. Oh yeah, the valve guides were also getting pretty sloppy but what do you expect for a hard ridden 930 with 130,000 miles? Refresh that puppy and tweak it. You will never regret it. You might want to read my link below if you would like my suggestions on some reasonable mods you can do while your car is apart. |
