Split the case today!

Hi,
Well thought I would share this with ya'll since when my wife walked in the shop and saw me with a big smile on my face starring at a greasy mess, she said "I hope you are having fun out here, I'm going back in the house"

Split the case today and as I had suspected, it has been split before. I bought the car (69 911T) with unknown engine history. Unfortunately the only bad thing I found was that the last person who opened it up must have done so with a screwdriver!!! There are four bad gouges in the case which I hope can be fixed! This would explain the bead of silicone along the bottom half of the engine!

Well it is apart and while I am happy it went well, I guess the real work is to come!

Good stuff on the case splitting - First case is always fun!

If you decide that your case is too scored along the parting lines, I've got a 1969 2.0E case I'd let go really cheap.

Man that oil looks dark!

If the scoring is shallow, the Loctite will fill it. 574 works best in general, but I think the 518 will fill bigger gaps. So if the scoring is only a couple thou (check the spec on the Loctite site) you can re-use the case.

Yes the oil was very dark. The car had been sitting in storage for about 6 years when I bought it from the previous owner, not sure if that has anything to do with it?

I'd recommend against getting rid of those windage screens on rebuild-time. After 30 years they seem to be more of a liability than anything else. One came apart in Tim's engine (l33t9eek) and caused trouble, and all the other sets I've seen are very brittle.

I wondered about the screens, I have not seen any reference to them anywhere, what are they supposed to do?

Supposedly they help oil droplets precipitate out of the vapors in the crankcase, thus reducing windage losses. The part number disappeared in the mid '70s, so Porsche must have felt there was good reason to ditch them - either they didn't really do much of anything, or they thought better of the idea.
