3.0 Turns 1/4 Turn And Stops Hard

I bought a 3.0 core engine and was told it turned over by hand freely upon buying and receiveing the engine I could turn it over by hand 1/4 turn each way and it would hit something solid...
I started tearing it down cam covers off everythings in place and cams in time... CIS off and exhaust removed fly wheel off so I turned engine onto its flywheel end on the bench and walla it turns over free as can be ... Ill be completeing tear down tomorow but till then it driving me crazy wondering what could do that.. any guesses??

Are the pistons and rods still on the motor?

I noticed on during my rebuild that the rods would bind against the case if they were not held somewhat centered like if they were connected to a piston.

Hey Andy!
As we Mainers like to say aaayyu I am in the in the middle of teardown of a 3.0 I bought on ebay.. the engine was listed as a 77 2.7 but the engine # listed was a 83 3.0 so I asked the guy for confirmation that the # listed was correct and he sent me a very good pix of the engine # so I won the auction at $760 for a 3,0 I thoght it was a good deal.
The motor is complete Simon and yes it kinda feels just like when you try to turn your motor over withou any pistons and your rods bind up on the case but why would it come out of it when I stood engine up on its flyewheel end it turned over and over freely?? Im gonna tear into it today I hope I dont find a rod has smashed the hell out of the case...
Andy its great to know someone els close by that is into Porsches plus we are both in the middle of a 3.0 rebuild..

Was the clutch attached when the motor wouldn,t turn? I ran into a clutch cover installed with the slightly longer but similar bolts from the CV joints . The longer bolts went through the flywheel and caught on the back of the case , but allowed it to turn about 1/2 rev normally. Just a thought.

Drum roll please...................
and the rod is busted off the crank and stuffed into the case the bootom half of the rod was moving around enough to get in the way of the crank
Oh well the guy I bought the engine frome sent me a refund check minus the $100 shipping charge ... told me whatever was left useable should cover my time into teardown ect. He was very surprised since the motor turned over 360 degrees before he shipped it.
