I am lookig at buying a set of used heads but one has a broken cooling fin mid way up. Looks to be broken a ways in. Is this a bid deal?

Is it broken off or just cracked? I had a cracked fin on one of my heads and the machine shop welded it. Wasn't much more than 20-30 bucks, if I recall.

Gone, as in missing, no where to be seen. Looks like it was hit or dropped or something. And it is a new break for sure by the look of it. A good size piece (over a third of one flat) of the fin is missing mid way down one head.

Is that head now junk? I want to do a rebuild and don't want to start with garbage.

Talk to a shop that restores m/c's.
I had a Norton Commando cylinder head with 2 broken fins. They were perfectly repaired by a skilled welder, who'd done many similar repairs.

For some reason, I've always loved those Norton Commandos. Like a dirt bike on steroids.

How big of a deal is broken fins?

I am at the beginning of my engine teardown. I have 2 heads that each have a broken fin at the top of the head on the exhaust side. I have 1 cylinder that has 2 or 3 broken fins with about a half dozen that are bent. Is this a big deal?

I was planning on using the heads for my rebuild. Is it worth it to get them repaired? What are these heads worth now to someone if I want to sell them? Same question with the cylinders--since I'm am changing the displacement I will be looking to sell them.
