OK thanks.
Why Mahle never plated its Birals with nikasil? Why directly on aluminum? I guess to save weight? |
The nikasil technology superceded the birals; linerless cylinders w/ nikasil (or) alusil cylinders were a great improvement over the flaws inherent in biral cylinders, incl. improved heat transfer.
Nickies on average are a little more expensive than oem cylinders, but do have nearly twice the fin count, are 50% stronger than factory aluminum cylinders, and our proprietary aluminum dissipates 50% more heat. I rebuilt my 3.0 using all steel studs and new Mahle Nikasils. The motor has excellent compression, great power and no leaks whatsoever. |
I would rather not have the extra expense of replacing my p/c s right now. Anyone with direct good alusil links here? Also, cannot see any cross hatching on my cylinder walls. Is that a problem? The color is even and very smooth to the touch. Also (this is odd to someone who has rebuilt other engines) ther is no lip at the top or bottom from wearing down the walls, normal?
