Cleaning Loctite from Case
What is the best way to clean Loctite from the Case Halves? I've been using the scraper but I'm afraid of getting to aggressive. Is their a chemical I can apply that will assist?
All responses appreciated. Michael |
Did you try acetone?

Brake cleaner used in generous amounts seemed to work the loctite off.

If you use a scraper or razor blade, pull it rather than push it, this will keep it from digging in to the material.
|
i use a semi-sharp pocket knife, and shave it off.

I use a razor. Scape in the direction of the joint so if you do make a scratch, it won't make a path for oil to travel from inside the joint to outside.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I'm going to try the brake cleaner on it to start, then move up to Accetone if that doesn't work well enough. The thoughts on scraping backwards and away from the joint are really good tips.
Thank you all. Michael |
I used a heat gun to soften it up a bit. Then, a (dull) gasket scraper and some lacquer thinner to finish it off.

I found that acetone and a scotch brite made short work of the loctite.

I have the same problem. I put a bolt which was covered with old loctite into acetone for a week; no reaction.
I heard epichlorohydrin is a better solvent than acetone but I have no experience with it. Has anybody out there used this stuff before ? Did it work ? What precations did you take ? |
I don't know why I didn't mention this before, maybe I discovered it since I last posted to this thread. Loctite/Permatex 80646 Gasket Remover will take it off. It will also take the paint off your engine
stand so be careful where you spray it... -Chris |
