An SC that I had a while ago had them installed at some point. They saved the motor when a tensioner collapsed. Promptly installed Carrera tensioners!

With the info given so far, I probably could figure it out. In sizing the stop, how do you figure out the max travel to avoid skipping teeth if the tensioner fails?

Thanks

Jubbie:

I finally got to it, after having written about it in a longer article in the local newsletter last summer. You can find it here:

Shops that don't recommend Carrera Tensioner Update?

I hope this helps.

Cheers, George

Thank-you. I think it should be posted as a tech article.

I'm slapping the defib on this thread and bringing it back to life instead of starting yet another tensioner thread.

Is it possible to do an internal mod, like the Jerry woods oil fed tensioner mod, on the earlier tensioners? My '71T tensioners have given no trouble for 90,000 miles, but since I am in there I wouldn't mind adding some insurance when I rebuild them. I know about the external collar mod, just wondering if there is something that is as failure proof as the Woods mod.

Thanks

I'd say if the earlier tensioners have a piston and a space where the internal stopper plug/slug can go then I don't see why not. As George mentions there are some measurements that need to be done first, and good point about the pin not working later. I put the GW stopper slugs in when I did the top end. The stock I used was a bronze bushing material from OSH I think, fit perfectly in OD, just cut to length. I don't remember how much "slack" I left - but I suppose it is wise to leave some to accommodate any number of hot/cold expansion scenarios.

The collars work fine, as long as you don't ignore a collapsed tensioner. Those are safety collars, not a permanent fix.

I've seen those collar tensioners come loose. If you use the 930 tensioners and pre bleed them with 60W oil, you have as good as you are going to get.

Thanks hcoles, I will take one apart and see if there is space in there for a spacer.
Thanks also Trackrash and RSTarga; may end up with the collars or the 930 tensioners.
