Hottening T cams
Hello all.
I'm aware I havea pile of early T cams which i should do something with. I know Elgin's do an E profile on them without welding. What is the hottest we can go without adding material please? David |

Probably that E profile. T cam cores are still worth $$$ because they can be welded. I would just trade them in on a set of 'S' cams...

The 911 E grind is all I will put on a T cam without hardface welding.

Thanks very much, John.
And the hottest for an original E is the improved S grind, yes? I hear good about that grind.. but will it give the same or better ultimate power as the original s ? Also, what is the most powerful you will put onto the original S these days please? Great to have such experts round here..saves many hours! Thanks David |

What is it that you are really trying to do? You can't simply swap cams without swapping pistons as well...

The "E" grind works well in the "T" car with std T pistons. In fact there is a set on Ebay right now....
My favorite upgrade for the "E" lately is the Solex grind done on E lobe centers (102) which fit the E cores nicely. Some cams will swap out using stock pistons. Some will not! If your not sure ask. The Mod-S grind we do is a good upgrade on the original "S" cams. I try to sell hardfacing when someone sends an original "S" in for regrinding. We can weld and grind a set of "T" cores and save the "S" cams. I just hate to grind down a good set of S cams.

Thanks again, John and Wayne.
This is all about stuff I have on the shelf which I'm trying to recycle as econoimically as possible.. And I would not dream of grinding good S, or for that matter E or solex cams! I do have quite a few of these which are slightly damaged.. not enough to need welding, but needing a resurface. Is the improved S grind possible on the E core? And I assume the Carrera 906 is the hottest we can put onto the S cores without a weld..? Sure I know 'bout the piston requirements.. tho' I have done it , just once, I would say that the T piston needs careful timing deckheighting etc if the E cam is to be used..interesting to learn someone else has actual;ly tried it too! Thanks again.. David |

Your welcome David.
The 906 grind will not fit the S camshafts. way too small on the base circle.

Thanks, again.
So really a worn S can only be reground as an S, and the E-into- improved S is possible? Thanks. david |

the improved S grind should only be ground on an original S cam core. It removes about .030" of material from the lobe. any more than that I do not like.
The E camshaft would lose about .045" of material. A little too much. The solex grind on 102 l/c is the best on E cams.
