exhaust oil leak

Hi
I have a 1972 porsche 911s targa. The problem is when I start it up oil is coming out of the exhaust!! I am hoping that you may have some idea what is causing this.

Thanks

Geobed

What do you mean "coming out the exhaust"? It may not be oil, but gasoline coming out the exhaust from being very rich at start-up.

Thanks for replying.
It is certainly oil. One mechanic said it may have something to do with the mechanical injection! I was hoping someone would have come across this problem, before we start stripping down the engine.

I've seen engines with exhaust valve guides so worn that they spit oil from the tailpipe during operation. But if that was the case, I would think that you would have a whole host of other problems as well, not to mention smoke.

It is not the guides as there is no smoke. Very perplexing

I agree with mtelliott. It is not uncommon for an MFI engine to run extremely rich on start up. With the thermostat, cold start injector and overall rich running of the MFI system you get raw gas running through the engine and out the exhaust port. As it run past the exhaust valve and out the port it washes the carbon off and as it leaks out it looks like oil.

I talked to my mechanic and he said he drained about a gallon of oil out of the crankcase! If the oil is supposed to be pumped back into the oil tank, could it be the oil pump not working?

How much oil was installed in the oil system? Beginning to read like it was an overfill.

That I don't know. What we can do is drain all the oil out of the system and start from scratch. I guess with a boxer style engine there could be a possibility of oil getting into the cylinders.

The mechanic drained all the oil out and refilled the tank to the correct level. That solved the problem. Thanks for all the help.
