3.2L 911 Turbo Setups?
Has Anyone on the board ever done a 3.2L turbo setup?
I have a 87 911 Carrera 3.2 and the engine has almost 213k miles on it. I drive this car every day, and am planning on rebuilding it this summer. The only prblem is that i am having trouble deciding what type of a setup to do. I will be basically using the car for track and drag use, but still want to be able to drive it on the street. If anyone has done a turbo setup on a 3.2 please list the difficulty of the task and what things were needed to be chnged for it to work besides lowering the compression. Im just getting into all this, and my knowledge isnt too good yet, so lol... However i have gained some knowledge from Waynes books, so at least i can always refer to them if needed. No matter what route i decide to take i will probably get rid of the fuel injection for carbs, or many individual throttle bodies. thanks for the help in advance. -Riley |

Ive been involved with a few 3.2 to 3.2 turbo conversions. Its reallya pretty straight forward project (or it is now after a few of these conversions). This is NOT an inexpensive project though!!
youll have to: *get the drivers side cam machined for a scavenge pump *get a scavenge pump *Have an intercooler made *get a set of headers *get a turbo *modify the oil tank to accept oil from the scavenge pump *lower the c/r *replace the motronic with another EFI system Since your engine has 231K on it add all the above to the price of a basic engine overhaul!! All the hardware should be relpaced with premium stuff ie ARP or Race Ware. The connecting rods should be replaced with Carillo, or Pauter rods.... Then after everything is buttoned back up, you have to map the EFI figure a few(more than a few if from scratch) hours for that. Im sure I left something out.... There are 3 of these coversions in various states of completion in my friends shop now |
Forced induction engines should be designed from the ground up - not necessarily have a turbo simply bolted on. You really need to swap out the pistons/cylinders, and upgrade the fuel injection to a programmable one...

I knew I forgot something...
you will have to get a fuel pump, or a supplement to your existing fuel pump, to keep up with the demand of the new engine.. You will also need a wastegate, and appropriate blow off valve.. If your doing this build yourself you obviously take the labor out of the equation, the cost of parts alone will make you take a real deep breath.... A rough figure of $12000 in parts alone isnt out of the question.... |
Yup, I've done this bolt-on conversion and it's very straight-forward ;)
Interface a turbocharger to the factory heat exchangers via a J-Pipe, locating turbo on the side of the engine Use a custom Motronic CHIP Use a Wastegate preset to 0.5bar (non-intercooled), or 0.7bar (Intercooled) Use a blow-off valve If intercooled, fabricate the appropriate intake plumbing Use a rising rate, boost sensitive fuel pressure regulator No need for electric scavange pump, use gravity oil drain to lower cam cover Plumb intake straight into the Air Flow Meter and away you go. Mike, Juan and I all had the same system on our cars running 0.7bar at factory 9.5:1 Compression. My engine has just been torn apart to go to stage 3 power levels and everything internally was in perfect condition (bearings, piston rings, valve guides etc). If you have a Euro spec 10.5:1 Carrera Engine, you have no option but to open her up to lower C/R, but for the US spec model, it can be a bolt-on conversion. U need the right CHIP though! Having said all of this, 1987carrerakid's engine has some pretty significant miles on it, so I wouldn't perform a bolt-on mod like this to his tired engine (mine only had 65k miles when I did this conversion). He'd need a top end overhaul with new valve guides & piston rings and if he's going to go into the engine anyway, why not fit a custom set of JE's in there OR if cost is prohibitive, lower the compression by using thicker head and base gaskets for ~8.5:1 C/R to run approx 0.85-0.9bar :D Just some recommendations ;) |
Oh those good old days...............;) All I have to said, that is a FUN set up, and the key for that sucess is the Chip and make no mistake not any chip.:) ;)

Hmm, well i hav decided to not go the turbo route. Im only 17 and there are many many year in the future for me to mess around with that later on. I decided to go with the 3.5 N/A, and i want to do a Individual throttle body setup also. I still have quite a bit of money to save up for this.. so its gonna be a while. Thanks again for all the info though on the turbo setup, ill have to do one for sure on a 3.2 in the future.

3.2 turbo'd
Anyone still around from the back years, regarding boosting a 3.2L 1987 engine?
Looking for details, or maybe even your castoff setup already fabricated for bolton. Only want to bolt on a mild boost, to have 300-320hp. Anyone? I mean DETAILS - where to mount, plumbing, wiring, what to buy, how/where to get fabrication done, tuning, etc. There's a lot of information out there, and it's frankly too much and too overwhelming. All I want is 300hp increase, bolt on assembly; no controversy or complications about which is better, etc. Thanks. |
Can i use a 3.3 turbo intake manifold for 3.2?
How about the 3.3 exhaust setup with turbo for 3.2? I want to do the same thing on my 3.2 and i have lots of parts from a 3.3 turbo |
