Boring from 955mm to 98mm
 

Hi Gang,

I have a set of 95mm Mahle cylinders out of my 3.2 Carrera.

I'm thinking of having these bored out to 98mm, Nikasil coated and having a set of JE Forged Turbo Pistons made up for them @ 7.5-8.0:1 C/R.

Does anyone know who specialises in this type of machining?

Is it worth doing? Any problems in doing this?

I'd like to think that Nikasil coating them will make them more durable and I heard from somewhere that this is what Mahle/Andial do anyway (bore 95mm cylinders to 98mm's).

Can anyone clarify this?

Electosil in Melbourne will bore and plate those cylinder for you.
Their web site's at www.electrosil.com.au I've just sent my pistons and cylinders there.

I don't know what Mahle does in Germany, but unless things have changed (I really doubt it) in the last 10 years since I worked at Andial the cylinders are not bored by Andial from 95 to 98.

We used to get them from Mahle as complete sets ready to install, there wasn't any work to do to the cylinders. If the set was for a 3.4L or 3.5L 930, I remember we used to modify (i.e. flat dome) the 98mm or 100mm Mahle Motronic piston to lower the CR to the 7 or 7.5 range. There was also additional modifications done to the 100mm piston to make a 3.3 to 3.6L using the than new 964 crank.

Yes, you can get 98mm piston and cylinder sets (I have one on the floor of my office right now), or you can have the 95s bored out...

if you can bore them out and recoat them with nikasil, can you also do that with alusil barrels? is it something deeper in the metal or is it just the finish? anyone have a cost estimate stateside for the recoat?

PaulM, I received a reply from the Electrosil mob and they are just WAY too expensive!

I can get my 95mm Liners bored out and replated in Nikasil for $900USD by EBSRacing.

Electrosil quoted me $435 PER CYLINDER for boring and plating :eek:

Yes, EBS can bore Alusil jugs and reprocess them to Nikasil. I think it is around $150 per cylinder.

Merv, I went through this late last year. I ended up buying new P&C from Pelican and having them shipped taxes and all.

If you go through EBS, contact a customs broker first as there is a shyte load of paperwork to ensure your ability to prove the originals you send over are the same ones coming back after repair. Otherwise the nice new shiny rebuilt set will confuse the poor customs dog and you will be charged customs on new items, rather than no charge for "repaired" items.

Just to follow up on the Mahle reboring issue, I checked at home and still have my notes for all of the Mahle internal piston and cylinder part numbers.

Same cylinders are used by Mahle (i guess rebored if 98's) for the following sets:

3.2L from 3.0L - CIS
3.2L from 3.0L - Carb
3.4L from 3.2L - Motronic
3.2L from 3.0L - Turbo
3.4L from 3.3L - Turbo

I guess that is why some Porsche engine builders feel that 100mm cylinders are stronger than 98's, because 98's apparently are 95's that have been rebored and thus are a bit thinner.

Actually, looks like Electrosil came to the party and have offered to do mine for a total of AUD$1500 (that's bore and re-coat), which includes a 6 month Guarantee on the coating ;)

Not sure what advantage I'll have going from 3.3L to 3.4L anyway (3% capacity increase), so might just be worth selling my 95mm P&C's as a set and just sticking the 930/97mm's I have in there.

That $1500 price is more like it. I think my quote was about that. As for Electrolube, I think it's included in their composite coating. You can check the technical description on their web site.

I don't have my original quote, and now they are quoting $380 a cylinder just for replating
