cam sprocket dowel pin
I'm tearing down a '74 2.7L and just removed the large nut. Wayne's rebuild book says to simply remove the sprocket at this point. But it won't budge. Haynes says to remove the dowel pin using a bolt that you screw into it. What size bolt would this be? Thanks.

The thread of the small end of the spark plug threads perfect. thread it and pull. the dowell will come out.

If you wiggle it, it should come out. The small pin doesn't really hold the sprocket in at all...

That's what I thought, but it just won't budge. I spent an hour last night at it, and wiggled, pried, jimmied, all to no avail. So I thought maybe Haynes was right for once. Is it time to go out and buy a pulley-puller? I probably need one anyway.

a small crowfoot prybar, or a angled brake adjuster spoon will persuade it off. a little on one side and a little on the other, repeat as necessary.

I got it off with a large rubber mallet and much vigouous shaking. I didn't want to get so physical with it yesterday, lest I break something. But with your'all advice, I figured I could go for it. Thanks.
