case splitting tool
After using the rubber mallet method to split the cases with no luck I decided to build a tool to do it. I removed the two studs on the top of the case that have a section of case between them on one side but not on the other. I made a plate to bolt on the back side of the two stud holes with a jack bolt in the middle. I used an aluminum softening plate under the jack bolt. After getting a little seperation, I used a rubber mallet to split them the rest of the way.

Dave:
Looks like you and I are on the same track. Which EFI system are you going with? My rebuild progress Brian |
Neat idea. Good for those shuffle-pinned cases...

Great idea! That hardest part of my 3.2 rebuild was getting the damn case to split!

Can't teach an old dog new tricks, unless the trick makes sense.
I like to tool but I don't see a need for it.
A good sharp blow to the yoke on your disassembly stand and the case halves jump apart. No beating, no prying. The engine is already in the stand so the only additional work is to swing the hammer. For those of you who take a great deal of pride in your one and only engine stand, be warned ! "This method is hazardous to your stands appearance". That's why all of our engines come apart on the same stand. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1086878341.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1086878361.jpg |
This being my first time to split a P-car case, I was a little leary about hitting it too hard.
As for the EFI, I'm strongly leaning toward Autronics, but the decision hasn't been made yet. My reasons are: quality, sequential injection, ignition, I've heard good things about it, and it's significantly cheaper than the M600 Motec system. |
There are a few other ways of separating the case, but if you do it wrong, you can damage the case. That is why I didn't put them in the book...
