Oil seal on cams ?

My book says to press an oil seal onto the cams before installing the aluminum retainer plates but there are no seals in my gasket set ??

Can anyone confirm or deny the requirement for a seal at this location ? I have installed the O ring on the retainer plate, and the gasket behind it.

Thanks,

Rick

There are no seals on the camshafts inside the cam chain housings. I recommend a light coat of 574 Loctite on both sides of the triangle gasket and before installing the o-ring I put a very thin coat of Dow o-ring lubricant. As you begin to install the plate, remember to check that the cam fits in the center of the plate. If it does not, you must check the dimensions of the engine. I.E.: deck height, cylinder height, cam to crank center.
There are times when the chain housings must be trimmed.

I also have had gasket sets that include different thickness's of chain housing gaskets to compensate for this

Rick -

It's not too late - Fedex can deliver fast. I did my last rebuild using the Haynes manual, and it does indeed suck for the purpose. There is a huge amount of needed information that is not covered, particularly in the details. As a result, I am now having to do a second rebuild on the same motor after 5 years. I am certain I would not be in this position if Wayne's book had been available and I used it. Even better, ask lots of questions to the board members - there is an incredible amount of talent and experience available here. When I get past the parts cleaning stage and begin to re-assemble, I will be putting up a lot of posts, myself!

Good luck!

Rick:

There is no seal. May they refer to the cam end plate gasket?

Get Wayne's book. You will have it in a couple of days if you order it now.

George
