3.2L to 3.6L upgrade? Need Advice
I have an 87 911 with 230,000 last rebuilt about 95,000 ago and I anticipate another rebuild coming up. I do not know if I have Nikisil cylinders so will assume that I will have to replace the pistons and cylinders. I saw a listing on ebay for a 3.6L upgrade kit of new Biral cylinders with new forged pistons with rings and choice of compression ratios for less than $3000. Why buy Mahles 3.2 replacement sets for more money? Any insight? buy the way the outfits name selling this upgrade is Motor Meister, whom I understand does not have the best reputation.

In my opinion, why would you be going backwards in technology? Birals would cool worse than your existing cylinders; even if your existing cylinders are worn or alusil, they could be replated and fitted with new pistons for less than the new biral set. If you're going to spend money at all on cylinders, it should be on something that will perform better, give you greater longevity, etc. Birals will do none of these.

I'm learning all the time on this site the invaluable knowledge and experience is well appreciated by us new P-car owners, I will probably hold out for a used set of 3.2L Nikisil cylinders and piston set that I can get checked out at a local machine shop for clearances, I believe there is no guarantee on my 87 911 if I have Nikisils which I understand are reusable or Alusils which are not. As far as replating goes I'm under the impression that for 6 cylinders replating is not very cost effective? Again thanks for the advice, Johnny O

If you did plate your alusils w/ Nikasil or replate your existing Nikasils, there are a few benefits of going this route. First of all, you can get a set of JEs and bump up your compression a tad, which will increase performance and efficiency. Also, the ideal piston to cylinder clearance can be established, greatly deminishing or eliminating piston slap or high oil comsumption, in cases with excessive clearance. Lastly, although probably more expensive than a used set, a replated set, when done by the right firm, will come with a lifetime warranty on the plating. If you call Pelican, they'll work together with us to have your cylinders redone and they can provide you with a new set of JEs.
